EDIT Oriya is the official script of the Indian state of Orissa. Oriya has its roots in the old brahmic script.

Like most of the indian scripts, Oriya is an abugida or an alphasyllabary writing system. An Abugida is a syllable based script, whose consonants are linked with the inherent vowel \"a\". Through the combination with different diacritical marks (e.g. <a href=\"http://www.decodeunicode.org/w3.php?nodeId=2981&page=1&lang=1&zoom=&prop=\">U+0B3F Oriya Vowel Sign I</a>), the previous inherent vowel \"a\" could be modified to another vowel.

The Oriya abugida consists of 35 characters, with the bidirectional category left to right. The script is case-insensitive.

Oriya is used to write the Oriya languages, Adivasi Oriya, Desia Oriya, Duruwa, Ho (Orissa), Khondi (Kui), Koya, and Santali.
