Why is A the first letter of the alphabet?
There is a United Kingdom television series called Time Team which is about Archaeology. Time Team webspace In a programme about a henge at Durrington Walls an A frame was used to erect a very large vertical wooden post in an exercise. It was said that there was no evidence that an A frame had been used to erect the original posts in about 2500 BC, yet that the technique of an A frame was known in various places around the world at that time. That got me thinking. It is called an A frame today because it looks like a letter A in the Latin alphabet. Could it be that the letter A is at the start of the Greek and Latin alphabets because a structure of that shape was used to erect posts at the start of a construction task and so a structure of that shape was used to start the structure of the alphabet? |
