EDIT This symbol is not officially included in the International Phonetic Alphabet, but has historically been used by sinologists to represent an alveolopalatal nasal consonant. It is distinct from the palatal nasal [ɲ] (more widely known by its representation in Spanish orthography: ñ) in that the alveolopalatal nasal involves a longer area of constriction, made with the tongue blade and spanning both the alveolar region and the front portion of the palate.
